good morning old bean!
this saturday is
we’ve talked about lagom here on the peanut before. and i had to re~visit it because i love it so.
it’s a swedish word you know.
and now that i think about it . . . it totally epitomized my best friend in my last year of high school.
i did a post about her too . . . you peanut readers may remember . . .
margareta. our swedish exchange student.
she was tall. she was quiet. she was drop dead beautiful. in the most nautral way.
when we were all teasing our hair . . . she didn’t tease hers to be higher.
i on the other hand even teased my pixie! which resulted in my looking like i had water on the brain.
as you will see in the picture below. LOLOLOL.
and she came over here to spend an entire YEAR as a teenager in america . . . with ONE suitcase full of
clothes. and one little case holding about three pairs of shoes. including her famous CLOGS. LOL!
yes. ONE suitcase of clothes.
is it any wonder that this little short minimalist and that tall swedish minimalist became best friends?
we were like lone rafts in a sea of over consuming messy teenage boats! LOLOL!
we never spoke of swedish lagom when she was here. i didn’t learn it from her. but i know now . . .
that she simply lived it. as did i. my mother was living lagom always too . . . now that i think about it.
but we didn’t even think about it then. it was just the way we were. we lived lagom.
the words minimalist and minimalism weren’t even heard then. and yet i’m sure we weren’t so alone.
NOW . . .
we minimalists and lagom people are much more alone!
over consumption seems to have grown bigger with each passing year in our country. until now it’s the
NORMAL WAY of living for most people.
there is no american translation word for the swedish word lagom.
and that may be part of the problem with us.
our concept of ‘good living’ in this country has been and continues to be . . .
MORE! I WANT MORE!
i’m not a success unless i HAVE IT ALL! there have even been books and books written about the
concept of ” HOW TO HAVE IT ALL!”
and when you’re bored in this country . . . you SHOP!!!
well . . . it seems that ‘having it all’ is not what it’s cracked up to be anymore old bean!
because for many people . . . having it all has been living up to their eyebrows in heavy DEBT.
and that is one of the most stressful ways to live. not fun for anybody. and all because usually . . .
from buying more and more STUFF! not always of course. but usually. i was there once too.
it turns out that there’s more to life than three cars and a tv in every room and every space in your home
stuffed to the gills with STUFF you’ve bought and just had to have . . . or so you thought . . . in the
moment! and later wondered . . . WHY did i spend money on THAT! ??? LOLOLOL!
there are as many different kinds of MINIMALISM as there are people who follow it and love it!
you can count everything you have. and keep all of your things to THAT NUMBER! that’s minimalism.
and you can live out of a backpack like one of my heroes . . . the captain. that’s pure minimalism.
you can live in rooms with no pictures of any kind on the walls. only sunlight and shadow as art.
that’s minimalism too. and i have done that on occasion. and it has it’s own ethereal beauty.
that kind of living minimalist has almost a spiritual quality i find.
and shapes and textures
and light and shadow.
all those examples are minimalism. it’s not one size fits all!
it seems that the sterile white has all the press. so . . . that’s how people think of ALL minimalism.
and you can be perfectly happy with any of them. any kind of minimalism is more calming and
life enhancing than living with tons of stuff all around a person! even if you’re NOT claustrophobic!
my own minimalism is more like
most of us like a little esthetic beauty in our living spaces too. and that’s my kind of minimalism.
we don’t have to live in a cold sterile environment to still be a minimalist! we can embrace lagom!
it’s the idea of instead of a hundred knick knacks in a room . . . and seven or more things on every single
tabletop or surface in the room . . . we have only a few things . . . balanced with some clear surfaces.
a few things that make our heart sing! and make us smile every time we look upon them.
it’s the difference in having so many things about that you begin to not even notice them . . .
or having just enough things about that you truly enjoy and want to keep for the sheer beauty they give.
one of the first things you learn in interior design is to let the eye rest. there should be space.
below are some pictures of minimal rooms that are based more on lagom. and they are not cold or sterile.
here are some REAL swedish rooms
representing lagom and minimalism.
i can relate to the FEEL of these rooms below
but not the actual space.
as you know . . i live in a wonderful little studio
in the trees . . . a second floor apartment
that is all of 525 square feet that i call
the wren house.
but i think these are very beautiful and fun to see!
glorious splashes of color
instead of ‘things’
they use lots of white.
their winters are long.
the lightness of the white captures every bit of precious sun.
but it’s always softened with texture or color.
like this warm wood floor.
or even brick!
if your taste is more traditional . . .
you can still have coziness and lagom!
and just to see if you’re still here . . . and paying attention . . .
a picture of how
the other half lives minimally
where nothing is needed but the view!
i’m thinking i might feel a little exposed there
come dark time!
but oh my!
and . . . .
my idea of lagom . . . always . . . in room . . . in clothes . . . in food . . . in life itself . . .
can be summed up in this last picture.
walking through this life barefoot . . . whether symbolically or actually . . . and simply enjoying it!
living your own authentic life . . . not some overpaid advertiser’s idea of it . . . whose sole purpose in life
is to make you unhappy with your OWN life. so you’ll go out and spend more money.
or as in . . .
having only one or two sets of sheets . . .
not owning 9 sets of sheets
if you seldom have overnight company
and there are only two of you in the house!
my wish for you this saturday and every day . . .
incredible lightness of being!
have a wonder full weekend old bean!
til soon old bean!
