SPRING HAS SPRUNG !!!!
not for some of you in the choke of the ever falling
i’m so sorry about that.
no pun intended.
but here at least . . .
it’s starting to feel like spring now.
every single year . . .
this time on the calendar . . .
means . . .
I WANT A BICYCLE !!!!
i do old bean!
i’m a biker from way back.
but for a little while in our early married life
i was without one.
one day bob just decided to surprise me
with a brand new
16 speed beauty.
it looked very much like this.
even with the bar.
this beautiful man.
that knew me so well.
OR . . .
at least I THOUGHT he did!
surprised me . . .
right out of the blue!
with this very expensive
it was perfect for HIM!
he obviously didn’t know . . .
WHAT I LIKED IN A BIKE!
i was horrified !
but i didn’t let on. oh no.
i wouldn’t have hurt him for the world.
not intentionally anyway.
he had to help me up on it.
dear lord. it was like climbing up onto a horse!
i am 5 foot 1 inch tall.
that’s 61 inches.
that’s 154.9 centimeters.
my toes barely touched the ground.
this bike was not for me.
i am best on an actual child’s bike with 24 ” wheels.
they’re just my size!
this was the first time in my life i’d been without a
trusty simple 24″ bike.
through the years i’d given mine away
and not replaced it.
here i sat perched on the top of this too tall
skinny thing with all kinds of gears and wires and
handle bars that you had to lean far forward to reach.
it was too far to reach the handle bars!
he was tall.
he must have tested the size on himself.
and completely forgot my size!
WHAT WAS HE THINKING !!!
good grief charlie brown!!!
our home had a very long fine chat gravel drive.
i took off.
so far so good! i even started to fly a little.
when i tried to brake . . . at the end of the curve . . .
i flew. make that . . .
right over the handle bars.
i laid there crying and bleeding.
picking gravel out of my knees and elbows.
i went from healthy and happy to a bleeding wreck
inside of 2 minutes!
” i just want a plain old schwinn bike!
just a PLAIN OLD BIKE BOB! “
and . . . of course . . .
spoiled little child bride that i was . . .
that’s just what i got.
i find i’m 68 years old
and i just want a plain old bike.
one like this.
MY IDEA OF A GREAT BIKE !!!
i even love the color!
or maybe even . . .
a sunshine yellow !!!
i won’t be riding on any highways.
even one as pretty as this.
as the marine has said about our city . . .
” their idea of bike trails is to stick up a sign
that says ‘ share the road ‘.
i would only ride it around my resort here and
on all the side streets.
there’s no traffic on our lanes.
here’s a woman probably my age in italy.
apparently women of all ages are bikers in italy!
but i notice she has those deadly hand brakes.
and i will ALWAYS
one of these things.
here’s one that’s kinda pretty!
in the oklahoma heat you want one that’s white.
or a light color to reflect the sun.
i would only ride in the very early
of the mornings.
or . . .
best of ALL!
in my favorite season . . .
MINUS the hand brakes of course!
i know it’s silly.
but i’m afraid of them now.
this is just a little spring dream.
i might act on it.
i might not.
but . . .
i’ll keep you posted!
til soon old bean.
