in days gone by i wonder if the weather was so radically changeable?
were the seasons more distinct and predictable then?
if i were a long~ago pioneer living on this prairie in a sod hut . . .
and yesterday it was almost 70 degrees here and had been like spring
for all these past days . . . in december . . . a winter month . . .
would i have to worry that tomorrow a great storm would blow in . . .
. . . as it will now in a very few hours . . . and the temperature will drop excessively . . .
and by friday morning this land will be covered with ice.
and the temperature will only get up to 24 degrees. would i have had days like that?
lovely spring in december. then a deep freeze more like january!
all in a few days’ time!
can you imagine what it must have been like?
i mean . . . to have NO WARNING. EVER.
no weather forecasts to tell you that ice is coming.
get your cattle in or you will lose livestock.
even though they’re grazing peacefully now on this spring like day.
we are so lucky in this day and age to live with knowing.
i love our forecasters. i simply love them.
the white dragon is coming.
i’m trying to fatten up all the little birds before the dragon comes.
for when it’s here i will not be able to go out.
in the last one a few weeks ago my steps were laden with solid ice.
a limb breaker for sure !!! trees as well as me! LOLOL.
not only feeding my little wren house birds . . .
also yesterday i went to the parking lots of the giant superstores
where they chatter and gather in the trees. so little for them to eat there.
these are city birds. they almost walk right up to you.
by the time i had left wonderful goodies under the trees on the islands for them
they were already gathering and yelling about it . . .
“JOE !!! FRANK !!! OVER HERE !!! IT’S A FEAST MAN!!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!”
the ladies were quieter but just as exuberant. they flittered and settled and
daintily picked out the best dried berries and seeds.
this was one of our street scenes in a previous storm.
it looks like simple water on the street!
and yet people get out in that and try to drive.
the police always say
” please. if you don’t have to get out in this . . . we are asking that you stay home. “
” emergency vehicles only. “
and something to remember . . . THEY HAVE TO BE out in it.
they risk their own lives to save the lives of silly people. just out for . . .
what? not sure. who knows? maybe it is something urgent. i don’t know.
but there has been PLENTY of time to plan.
it’s not like we’re those pioneers in sod huts on the prairie.
we’ve known this giant is coming for almost a week.
thanks to the fabulous weather men who track these monsters for us.
maybe it’s that same weird thing in us that makes us stand outside
and watch an approaching tornado here. we do that too! i have done it myself.
exclaiming “WOW !!! THIS is a really big one! would you look at that beauty!”
WHAT THE ???? !!!!! LOLOL !!!!
BUT. the big but.
with ice storms . . . even i have good sense enough to batten down until it’s over.
and then even more sense to not try and drive or walk on it til it melts some.
but there are always tons of people here who slip and slide and cause accidents.
they drive those big 4 wheel drive things that make them feel safe i guess!
and yet it’s a pure ice rink that they’re trying to drive on.
and they don’t slow down. not nearly enough anyway.
we’re in the area where our winter precip is always first sleet and then freezing rain.
and if we’re lucky . . . maybe some snow. and ALWAYS with the high wind.
i remember living in states back east and northeast where the snow simply fell
in huge flakes coming down. silently. no ice first. so lovely!
and you can drive sensibly and carefully in it and get some traction.
that is . . . after you’ve shoveled out your buried car and the driveway!
LOLOL! not saying they have it easier old bean. just DIFFERENT!
HERE. a different case entirely.
unless you have spikes of some kind on tires . . . and you can’t of course . . .
you’re doomed to slide. and cause wrecks.
they’re saying once again
we might just get some snow with this after the sleet and ice!
i apologize heartily to all of you if you’re already sick of it where you are . . .
but I LOVE IT ! LOLOL.
laughing like a maniac here!
waiting for the white dragon.
got my grub. even what i can eat if the electric goes out . . .
and all my blankets and quilts are ready to keep me warm if that happens!
one year in a bad ice storm i had no electricity for 7 days.
on the 7th day the thermostat in my house said 39 degrees.
zeke and i had simply stayed in bed together for the worst of it.
i had a battery operated radio. i was just thinking we needed to go somewhere
in case it dropped further and we froze in the night!
and the electricity came on! it was the 7th day. YAYYYY!!!!
my zekey had a pioneer spirit. he never left my side.
we cosied up together. it’s amazing how much heat a small dog can generate.
most of that heat was simply pure love of the deepest kind. the best.
he would have stayed right there with me regardless of what came our way.
i miss you my zeke. i miss you.
so beautiful. i just find it all so beautiful.
the glow of lights on the pristine whiteness everywhere.
it’s like some kind of silent mercy covering all the ugliness of our sins.
the sin of litter.
styrofoam and paper and empty plastic bags
and bits and pieces of garbage that we think nothing of
throwing down apparently. it covers all that
and it creates a wonderland
for just a while anyway.
would that it could always be so clean and beautiful!
in every season.
alas and forthwith and as it were !
i’ll leave you now old bean. to enjoy your day. whatever your weather.
it’s just good to be alive!
going off now to treat myself to some breakfast maybe at the cracker barrel.
they’ve got an egg sandwich there for only $4.29
it’s 2 eggs and sourdough grilled toast and two slices of fresh tomato
and hash brown casserole. not bad for 4.29! i take it apart and eat it like a meal.
and they have a fire going in the fireplace on cold days. nice.
then off to give the birds one more feast before the white dragon gets here.
it’s always so good to visit with you old bean!
today is “hump” day for those of you at jobs. i always liked mondays and thursdays best.
don’t ask me why! LOLOL.
my heart to yours. take care of YOU.
don’t slip on the ice of your own world . . . whether imagined or real.
til soon old bean.
