COCA COLA !!!
i used to drink that stuff til it was goin’ outta style!
there is just something about an icy cold coke with crushed ice
on a hot day.
and when i worked i was as bad as pavlov’s dog.
if i heard someone pop a tab on a soft drink…. i had to have a coke!
talk about an addiction!
then one day i decided to simply give them up. and i did.
i have one now only on an extremely rare occasion… and then… they always taste too sweet!
but my previous coke addiction is not what this post is about!
do you use toothpaste?
and toilet paper?
and do you eat all kinds of food?
and wear clothes?
and buy gas?
and sit on furniture?
what is this charlie brown??? the third degree???
it’s eventually going to be a heartfelt homage
to some of my favorite people . . .
drivers of the big rigs.
the people that move the stuff around for us.
even a minimalist such as i . . . who doesn’t even HAVE a lot of stuff! . . .
well . . . we owe them so much. and we take them so much for granted.
traffic jams are bad enough. i can’t imagine what they’re like driving one of
those behemoths! and parking? and turning? OMGosh!!!!
and doing it ALL on a tight SCHEDULE!!!
we run up on them and get in their way and they just lumber along . . .
doing what they have to do. bringing us the goods.
whether we live in vail colorado at thousands of feet altitudes and
winding icy mountain roads in ski season . . .
pretty vail. i wouldn’t even recognize it now ~ it’s gotten so big!
all those skiiers and vacationers have to be fed you know . . .
and fueled . . . and medicated . . . and . . . and . . .
well you get the picture!
and with luck you won’t see this. because if we in cars lose control easily on the icy road
think what it would be like controlling that giant with the trailer trailing . . .
we complain that they’re in our way. you’ll hear people say . . . “they cut me off!”
“they act like they own the road!”
maybe a handful of them might. . . but overall . . . they are the safest most efficient drivers out there.
they live a life that’s solitary and beautiful.
they keep america moving. and eating. and living.
everything we have or do is made possible by something they’ve delivered.
even the simplest things.
or the most important life saving things. it gets delivered. supplied. on time.
and with little or no recognition from anybody.
they’re just out there. doing what they do.
there’s a camaraderie among them.
they’re a special breed.
a cozy night’s sleep. or… make that a few hours of shut eye. then back on the road.
rain or shine. hot or cold.
sleepin’ in the cab.
home sweet home.
in our part of the country . . . on the turnpikes and the major highways . . .
cars share the big ‘truck stops’ with the big rigs.
the food is good. the coffee usually excellent.
over the loud speaker you’ll hear dangerous weather alerts and forecasts.
you’ll hear ” number 17 clear for shower”
that means you’re number’s called so you can go in and take a hot shower.
the general public doesn’t use those. just the truckers.
gas up that giant. hit the road jack.
only . . .
they’re not ALL jacks!
NO! more and more JILLS are out there!!!
special ladies with special driving skills.
those jokes about ‘women drivers’ are HISTORY! you should see these ladies drive.
and apparently they’re adept at fixing a few things too!
next time you enjoy putting some kind of goods in your shopping cart
whether edible . . . toiletry . . . toy . . . or clothes . . .
remember these wonderful special people!!!
i’m not preaching here old bean. i’m as guilty as the next person
at not realizing how important their job is!
and how this country takes them for granted!
though . . . truth to tell . . .
i’ve been in awe of them and their life style for as long as i can remember . . .
i find them very beautiful.
their strength and size are awesome.
they park and maneuver those rigs into places i wouldn’t even attempt in my car!
this is a silver beauty.
and… something i’ve noticed… they keep them clean! shiny. beautiful.
well… it’s their home they’re driving!
sleek. white. LONNNNNGGGG.
and have you ever had them MOVE you?
WOW. that’s a whole other type of trucking right there!
they show up with that huge thing . . .
on your little street.
they back into your driveway or near your house . . .
without taking out your neighbor’s or your mailbox . . .
or trees . . . !!!
and they load up all your important STUFF !!!!
then they drive it across country or wherever you’re new home will be . . .
finding the new street . . .
unload all of it once again . . .
surely i’m not the only one to find that amazing.
being a minimalist i have no need for them. but when i’ve seen them
in my neighborhood . . . it’s simply incredible what they can do.
on such a narrow street!
and then there are those . . . yes.
those that truly risk their lives.
some of them carry highly flammable loads. loads that we depend upon.
they get it to the gas pumps. so we can fill our own vehicles.
it’s a dangerous job.
they can’t stop as fast as we in cars can. and they can’t maneuver quickly out of our way
if we make a quick change in our lanes.
this unfortunate scene was no doubt ‘everyone’ going too fast in the given conditions.
whether they’re running in the time that we’re home with our families . . .
making up precious time on a lonely night stretch of highway
or taking a load to a place nobody even knows is there . . .
wherever you find them
i hope you’ll look upon them with friendliness and gratitude
at the job they’re doing for us.
i’m just glad somebody wants to do it! it’s sort of ‘a calling’ i’d think.
not the life for just anyone.
takes a special set of skills and a personal strength of solitude and courage.
this post is dedicated to the daughter of a friend of mine.
she drives a big rig.
her mom wrote about it on her own blog ‘ THE SAND CASTLE ‘.
that’s in my friends list of blog links in the sidebar if you’d like to visit!
you’ve read her mom’s comments on the peanut here.
i call her mom . . . rv braveheart.
yup. rv braveheart! she drives her own ‘rig’ which is an rv.
she traveled all by herself all last summer in her rv.
i did a post about meeting her here where i live when she passed through.
